Harvest Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival
The Harvest Moon Festival (also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival) is associated with the legend of Chang Er, who is said to have taken a pill, turned ino a fairy and flown to the moon to escape from the pursuit of her husband. When the moon is at its brightest in mid-autumn, you can see Chang Er.
The exact date of the festival changes from year to year in the Western calendar, but it is usually in mid-September, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar.
In Chinese cultures, children make paper lanterns and are allowed to stay up late before eating their mooncakes.
A similar tradition exists in Germany, where children make paper lanterns and parade after dark on St. Martin’s Day.
