There are two stories about the origin of the Filipino people. They are passed on as oral legends from one generation to the next.

LEGEND 1

Long, long ago, there were no people on earth. One day, a tired bird alighted on a bamboo plant in order to rest. It happened to peck on the bamboo. Suddenly, the bamboo opened. Out of the first joint came a man named LALAKE (the Tagalog word for Man). He was the first man in the world. Out of the second joint emerged a woman named BABAE (the Tagalog word for Woman). She was the first woman in the world. LALAKE and BABAE married. They had many children, who became the ancestors of the Filipino people.
