Make Holiday Lanterns from Milk Cartons

Here’s an easy way to make a lantern that you can light with a tea candle (careful!) or glow stick for festivals such as the Harvest Moon Festival or St. Martin’s Day. This is good to make with older children but will need supervision since it does involve some cutting.

You’ll need: an empty 1/2 gallon milk or juice carton, colored tissue paper (optional), glitter or sequins for decoration (optional), scissors, glue, art knife, darning needle, a small amount of wire, pliers, paints, a tea candle or glow stick, a round stick to carry your lantern.

Instructions:

1. Rinse out the carton, and cut off the top.

2. Use the knife to cut patterns or windows into the sides of the carton.

3. Color the sides of the carton with the paint.

4. After the paint is dry, decorate your carton with glitter. You can also paste tissue paper on the inside of the windows for a ’stained glass’ effect.

5. Use the needle to punch holes on two opposite sides of the lantern. Thread the wire through each side and create a loop at the top to attach the lantern to your stick.

6. Make a small notch about 2 inches from the top of your stick to fasten the lantern.

7. Light the inside of your lantern with a glow stick or — very carefully — with a tea candle that you light with a long match, and you’re ready to parade your lantern and celebrate the Fall moon!
