Good Luck in the New Year from Germany

There are a lot of different good luck charms to help in the New Year.

Here are some that are widely available as chocolate or marzipan figures in Germany. Let us know if there are other good luck symbols in your culture!

  • Four-leaved clovers
  • Lucky pigs – a symbol of fertility for the Germanic tribes
  • The lady bug, called “Marienkäfer” or “Mary’s bug” in German, a messenger for the Virgin Mary, said to protect children and the sick
  • The chimney sweep – because he was the first to be on the streets on January 1 and wish people a happy new year!

Best of luck for a happy, successful and healthy New Year!

Thanks for posting this! we are, as a matter of fact, celebrating the New Year in Germany. Since firecrackers, both inside, “table”, and outside are popular, I’ve always wondered about the significance of the little trinkets that explode out of them.

Now I know. This gives me one more thing to share with my DS. Unfortunately, all over the world, as customs become commonplace, most people forget the rationale behind the different objects.

Thanks again and happy new year
