Germans Fire Judge Who Ruled that Moroccan Culture Includes Domestic Violence
A German judge has been removed from office after refusing a German-born Muslim woman’s request for a rapid divorce based on domestic violence. The judge had ruled that “it wasn’t unusual in her husband’s Moroccan cultural environment [for a husband] to beat his woman” and quoted verses from the Koran to support her view. Story from UPI.
Mel Gibson Tells Mayans to “Make Your Own Movie”
Responding to audience questions about his movie “Apocalypto,” Mel Gibson insisted that he had researched Mayan culture and history before making the film, which depicts Mayans engaged in sacrificial ceremonies. Audience members and protesters continued to challenge Gibson, accusing him of racism, on which he lost his temper and told the hecklers to make their own movie. The debate continues in the comments of this news report on TMZ, many of which seem more thoughtful than the comments Gibson seems to have made from the podium at the Cal State University film class.
