Make Easter Eggs with Natural Colors
Many cultures color eggs to celebrate Easter and other holidays. It’s easy to experiment with natural dyes to color your eggs – you probably already have many of these in the kitchen. You can use these techniques on either hard-boiled eggs, or on empty eggshells that have been blown out and rinsed. Try some of the materials below, or experiment with your own and let us know what works.
- Red: Fresh beets, juice of pickled beets, cranberries, frozen raspberries
- Pink: Purple grape juice, red onion skins
- Orange: Yellow onion skins
- Light yellow: Orange or lemon peels, carrot tops, celery seed or ground cumin
- Yellow: Ground turmeric
- Pale green: Spinach leaves
- Green-gold: Yellow Delicious apple peels
- Blue: Canned blueberries, red cabbage leaves
- Beige to brown: Strong brewed coffee, instant coffee, boiled black walnut shells
Directions
1. Place the eggs in a single layer in a pan. Add water to cover.
2. Add one teaspoon of vinegar.
3. Add the coloring material. Use more material for more eggs or for more intense color.
4. Bring the water to a boil.
5. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes.
6. If you are pleased with the color, remove the eggs from the liquid.
7. If you want the color to be stronger, leave the eggs in the dye and put them in the refrigerator overnight.
